Stayed up waaaaay too late last night. Prepping some crab cakes that I had for dinner tonight - oh so good! Finished a crapload of domestic chores and chatted with a few friends online. Woke up really late - enjoyed sleeping in, had the windows open to breath in the cool Fall air. San a few errands and then came home to go on a mid afternoon training ride - headed out to Harpers Ferry again then rode down part of the parkway in West Virginia and headed back - was a fast ride back - tail wind. Total of 55 miles. It was incredibly beautiful out there. photo by d. scott gregory Making Crab Cakes click on photo to enlarge |
Came home and took a shower and headed out to Target to get a few things, including a new throw rug for my ketchen - was an impulse buy, but looks great. Had to pick a new flashlight - the oddest thing happenned when I got home and put in the batteries....when I went to turn it on, the damn knob broke off, grr! I was in the process of putting the flashlight, packaging and the receipt back in the bag...and all of a sudden - my older flashlight that was on the counter just sort of turned on. I was like wtf? It works perfectly now. Must be sympathy pains. Cooked my crab cakes, rissotto & asparagus - oh so good. Now just finishing other domestic crap - will be at my parents tomorrow night for a relaxing steak dinner. Life is still good.

Wowee...what a long ass day. But I'm awake and alive for a really relaxing weekend. Work was a silly thing...a mere portal between waking up and going to get real things done - and more importantly, to pick up my paycheck. Ha! We got out of work early, mid afternoon - which was perfect because I had a lot of things to do before I went on my training ride. I hit the bank, and then drove home to drop off bike so I could get my car mini-detailed (was in desperate attention for inside n out cleaning. There's this great car wash spa in Ashburn - they do a fantastic job, takes over an hour - but it makes your car look brand new inside and out. Finished up, got a few groceries on the way home and by then it was about 4pm. I went out on a nice 2 hour ride - beautiful sunset over the Potomac, I biked from my apartment out to Harpers Ferry and back - very nice. Came home and took a quick shower so I could meet up with a friend for a qick beer and bite to eat before she left town for the weekend. Came home and cleaned my bike and did some work in my deck garden after yesterday's wind damaging debacle. Fluttered around the house cleaning while watching a really silly DVD that a colleague let me borrow, Undercover Brother. I'm in for the night, gonna prepare some crabcakes and the works for a dinner I'm making tomorrow night - will chat with a few friends and work on my stoopid cookbook. Tomorrow will be a relaxing day - a long training ride in the mid afternoon, more domestic stuff...then a nice dinner. I'll be joining my parents for a nice steak dinner at their home on Sunday in exchange that I help them set up their new Dell - get configured for the net. Will be beautiful Autumn weather - relaxing weekend. I wanna try to relax this weekend, because the next two weekends I'll be out of town for each weekend, doing centuries (the last two organized centuries) for the season. Life is good.

Left this morning for work - it was actually chilly out. Leather weather. Wore my leather jacket for the first time this Fall. It was raining and whizzed to work and the day sorta flew by with a frenzy of friendly professional drama. The weather called for more rain all afternoon, with a lot of wind - 20-40mph gusts. But it never really rained - just those crazy clouds that whisp and dart quickly along the seemingly tops of trees. It was actually a very pretty Fall day, crisp with little humidity. I was eager to go out on a ride to enjoy the weather, but knew it would be windy - so I picked a headwind direction towards Hamilton. It was hellish heading into it, albeit very pretty. Went only to Hamilton and back, roughly 36 miles. The ride back was very swift - came back in record time. photo by d. scott gregory New Lamp in Livingroom 1 click on photo to enlarge |

Finished up and ran a few errands, including going to Scan furniture store - to finally order my new bar chair stools (chrome legs with a black leather seat and short back - to match my dining room chairs). In the process, I saw a lamp on clearance that just hit me with pure impulse that it would match the rest of my livingroom (needed an accent side lamp). It was on sale, but not cheap - 90 bucks. But I had to have it, checked out and put a deposit on the stool chairs (they will be here next Wed). Drove home and unpacked my lamp, work crap, cycling crap and settled into a fun evening of minor decoration, light domestic chores, cooking and then some tv - until I went out onto my deck to water the plants. CRAP! The wind did some major, yet minor damage. Blew over all three of my heavy plants on plant stands knocking my deck furniture in all directions...an explosion of potting soil and broken terra cotta plant pots. Grr! I watered what I could after I managed to scoop up the plants and rescue a plant with a broken pot (will have to replant tomorrow night - I stuck it in a plastic bucket, it's new temporary home until I can get a new large pot). Life is still good.

Long day at the office - was really pretty out...had to wear a leather jacket this morn to work, getting chilly. Finished up work, went on a really pleasant training ride out to Shirlington - was dark on the way back, grrr. 44 miles. Came home tallked to some relatives up in Deleware to who'm I'll be staying with for the Savage Century - watered garden, paying bills, organizing, domestic crap, cooked dinner, now just relaxing in front of tv. Life is great in an Autumn kinda way.

Well crap. It's now offically Fall....which I LOVE....but now it's starting to get chilly and dark out - during my rides. Today was more noticable than ever, it's been since Friday cycling after work. The sun set tonight at 6:57pm - which is a 1/2 hour to 3/4 hour shy of when I finish my usual training ride. So I broke out my transitional set of lights - the LED ones, lightweight and tiny - but not full strength. I noticed how chilly it gets now after dark - time to break out the arm warmers. I snapped this shot at twilight (click for larger view). photo by d. scott gregory Deer eyes click on photo to enlarge |
On my way out to Purcellville and back, 46 miles - I spotted at least 26 deer. I snapped this pic of some deer that I encountered on the trail - you can see their eyes. I finished up, came home and did domestic things - trying to make arrangements in Newark, DE to stay with some of my relatives for the Savage Century on the weekend of October 15th. All in all a good day. Work was semi-typical....spent the large part of the day at an offsite meeting with a client.

I must be a glutton for punishment. I woke up this morning really sore after the century I did yesterday...not to mention the 62 miles I did on Saturday - I choked down some coffee with a handfull of Advil and headed into the office. The day went by really quickly and it began to rain (we really need the rain), I thought...I'll just go to the gym afterwards for a "stretch" ride on one of the spinner machine. Well, it seems that on Mondays is the other day of the week for the spinner classes. I thought...we'll..I'll just spin in the back and stay quiet and leave mid class. Well, there was this cycling buddy of mine who is in my cycling club who was leading the class.... Well suffice to say...I stayed for the entire class hour spinner class (on top of the 1/2 hour I put in before the class began). I am worn out. Came home and had some sushi and trying to figure out a few things, paying some bills, et al....will chill in front of the tv for an hour... Life is still good.

What a day...and such a beautiful Autumn day. Woke up and drove off to Thurmont, MD for a leisurely Century - a low key group ride. I managed to team up with some of the folks in my cycling club and we pacelined the entire thing. 3 stops along the way for gatorade and some gel packs and bananas and bathroom break. We continued on, very flat for the most parts of it - rolling hills that you speed down and slingshot back up over the next rolling hill. We finished in a little under 5 hours and enjoyed the BBQ picnic afterwards of hot dogs, hamburgers, et al. I milled around and then eventually drove towards home - ran to the store for a few items and came home for a nap. Woke up in the evening and finished preparations for the work week and turned on the tv to see a few fall premiers. Just chillin.

The movie Forrest Gump, Tom Hank's character ran for miles...actually his brother...he ran up Grandfather's Mountain listening to Jackson Browne singing - the finishing point of of Bridge to Bridge...with an exilirating and breathtaking (literally) finale...one of the finishing moments in the last parts of the climb is "Forrest Gump Curve"....
