Slept in this morning - it seems that I needed alot of sleep to catch up on. Was difficult to get out of bed too, raining, cold...and I was feeling little aches all over from the drastic weather changes. I finally got out of the house at 1pm after much deliberation. It was damp and cold out - I put my bike in the car (clean as a whistle, so clean you could eat off it) - and an array of layered bike clothes. I had an errand or two before I went biking.

Ran the errands real quick, I was all outfitted up at 2pm - on the road heading West from Vienna...bumped into a few blokes I know from the Reston Bike Club and the Spokes guys..a local racing team. We started out in the same time/direction/speed...just sorta pacelined the nasty 20-30mph oncoming gusts of wind. It was horrible...we were biking headfirst into seemingly gale force winds - at one point, in upright stand up pumping - only going between 10-14 mph. we had decided on a 50+ mile ride - although getting there was the challenge - took us over an hour to get to Ashburn, but we knew coming back was going to be alot of fun. WE finally got to our aggreed upon turn around point, shy of Clarks Gap near Peonean Springs/Hamilton. Each of us took a few swigs of water, turned around and made a gleefully fast run back. We averaged about 35mph on the straight aways...up to 45mph in the hills..the wind just pushed us home...plus it was mostly downhill. We got back in record time, only 52 miles total.

On the way back, between pacelines - I talked to a few of my comrades...one of whom told me about his experiences with double Centuries (a single 200 mile race/ride)...he trains for them year round. He explained that based on my current training situation, to train for a double century is not any different. I'm now absolutely sure I'm going to attempt one this Spring/Summer/Fall...just need to find the one. If anything, the regular "Century"s that I do will just be a training run...

Speaking of training, I have downloaded the latest Potomac Pedelers Touring Club's 2005 Mileage Log (worksheet) - if anyone is interested in logging their own biking miles...you can download it (PDF) and print it by going here

More of the same tomorrow - except the weather will be nicer - may try to get my car washed, and cook something experimental tomorow night..like conch stew or something - will be an interesting "paring" with grilled bratwurst, pears and fontana cheese...

Yay! - today is finally Friday. It seemed like a simultaneously long ass week - yet a really fast week. Just the finality of it all. Work was a busy mess of just ...well, work. It flew by really fast. Then in the afternoon, it suprized us all - began to rain. Was not in the forecast. I was like...oh well..I'll just bike in it.

Which is what I did, and after 38 miles - I was completely soaked. Not to mention, releived - seems that there's a new sheriff in town (or something). I biked from Sterling to Hamilton tonight, which is a really remote bike ride..there are 5 mile stretches on the trail which there are no intersecting roads or what not. Just me, the cows, deer, rabbits, rain, cold, darkness... So I sort of blocked my mind the whole recent debacle of the police presence - "just keep it in mind" thing...I enjoyed my entire ride out, despite the crappy conditions. I saw many bikers on the way out....not too many coming back...in either direction.

On the way back, I was almost delerious at how great the ride was until I see ahead...a pair of red lights...dots, slightly moving - about a mile ahead. I say to myself..."shit...those look like tail lights... " (as in tail lights on a police car - there are NEVER cars on the bike path, the only car[s] that would EVER be on the trail would be a police car). I slowed down and pulled to the side, turned off my headlight and reached around and turned off my flasher - but I was far enough behind them for them to really see me. I sort of sat there for a few minutes, in the rain, dark, cold, farmland wondering...what next? I was way the fuck out in the boonies - I'd have to wait for a while to continue (he looked to be travelling about 10mph..I'd catch up to him in no time)...or bike back 5 miles to take an alternate route (on a highway..very dangerous)...or just bike for a while without my lights on (moon was out...I could see path)...and stop every few miles while he moves ahead....great plan..except I had another 8 miles to go (I was on the end of my ride back).

There I was biking for a few miles... at a really slow pace..so I'd not catch up, then I'd duck behind trees when there was a patch of light (it was odd, it was raining out..but really light from the moon and distant light pollution). Eventually, the car turned off near Rt 28. I felt really stupud and sneaky...but I was able to get back without hassle.

Got back to car, dried off, and drove home..had dinner, then spent almost 2 hours cleaning my bike, re-lubing it. Gee, just finished a hot date with my bike on a friday night, (rolls my eyes). The only cool highlight of the day was illustrating the above picture from scratch.

Woke up to a severe drizzle and coldness - wasn't able to continue to keep the cold off all day. Work was just that - work. Even though we are having a major breakthrough with projects, et al....little improvements are now taking effects. The simple things...like, having someone actually come out and service our copy machine (which has not been done from what I've been told in 3 years), brand new office chairs were ordered...leather high backed ergonomic chairs...not the crappy left over broken chairs we all have...and finally...real desks - these are the really nice design, glass, real wood, functional type desks that all high tech offices (should) have.

After work, I was dreading going on a bike ride - after yesterday....wondering if It was legal to bike on the trail after dark. So I biked the roads that ran parallel to the trail (seeing if I could see any police on the trail), dodging and weaving in and out of the traffic while dark - stoopid suburbanites not familiar with a cyclist. At this point it was really foggy, the roads were wet and I was unsure if I should chance it. I finally put in about 8 miles just riding parallel to the path (but crappy conditions, glass, cars, stop signs, et al) - it was dark and dangerous. FInally turned around and came back. Then decided to take a risk and bike on the bike trail in the opposite direction. I got all paranoid, thinking...cripes...they will see me get on the path...Oy vay. I sat there at the entrance to the trail at Sterling Blvd...about to head West when I see another cyclist's headlights heading my direction (in the direction I was going to go). When he approached, he chirped "everything all right?" I chimed back, yes...but a little paranoid...did ya see any police back there?" (I went on to tell the story and my situation...he told me (as we started biking west...he was commuting), "well, technically you are not supposed to be on this bike trail after dark - but the rules are a little fuzzy, being that the trail is considered a park, but also a thorouhfare for commuters..." he went on giving me the ease of mind that last night's debacle was just an isolated event (he's been biking/commuting for 8 years on the trail...never one incident)

Phew, I thought...but maybe there's a crackdown. Hard to say - the presence of the cop was probably due (obviously) to the drunk homeless dude who was there...and the recent problems with the MS-13 gangs in the area. As a cyclist, I am harmless. Just going through there as a trainer for centuries...

Speaking of which, I got turned on to a neato - sadistic concept today...the DOUBLE Century (it's an all day, 200 mile bike ride/race, the Davis Double Century is the most famous - 35th anniversary)...takes about 12-15 hours to complete (have to finish under 18 hours). I'm actually considering ...um... something to aspire for....to try. (great story of someone who has done it, and another) I feel a collective set of eyes rolling.

I will post an interesting link of a survey I found of the Washington & Old Dominion trail's recent demographic survey - quite interesting...of the few statistics that were profoundly memorable - that the average age group of the 1,800,800 people who use the trail annually - 41 years old..the largest group who uses the trail is 36 - 53 years old...the gender divide was very interesting.... 51% of the trail users are women, the 49% men...68% of the users are cyclists who train or commute daily, many marathon trainers, et al fit in the other large fitness demographic...the MOST interesting statistic/demographic.....the median sallary (before taxes) of the people who use the trail is $92K - I was flabbergasted). This is based on the fact that 20% of the trail's users make incomes of over 120K a year, less than 20% make less than 60K. This was amazing. So look forward to this link tomorrow.

Work was a quick wild dream. The day itself was a dreary overcast, drizzly day. I decided to bike in it - what the hell. It was dark, drizzling, wet, cold - but not freezing.

I enjoyed the entire 36 miles, until the last 1/4 mile on the trail ...I look up ahead..I see lights...what look like car lights. I was like...wtf is that? (in most parts of the trail...I am way out in the middle of nowhere, no access roads, just trees, deer, darkness...but tail lights..and headlights? I slowly approach and realized that it was a Police car. This police car was right in the middle of the bike trail (not much room to get around) - his headlights on some dude he was questioning. I Thought not too much of it..I was just gonna slowly approach and then sorta bike around (like a car pulled over on the highway). I get closer, the cop turns around and with his flashlight, pointing at me..and my headlights pointing at him...he says in this really loud authoritative voice "pardon me sir, can you please stop your bike, turn off your lights, keep your hands on your handlebars and show me your ID..." I was like wtf? OK...so I did what I was told - good thing I had some ID on me (...sometimes in the summer, I bike without my wallet..too heavy...but I do have emergency contact info on me).

So all of a sudden, I find myself there, with this other dude he was questioning (a deranged looking man, obviously drunk, looked lost)...and me...under some kind of suspicion (I later heard the call back from the dispatcher that the other dude had a whole slue of offenses..including an outstanding warrant). Meanwhile, the cop says to me, I need to see if you are not wanted somewhere else for something (implying all sorts of shit...), and calls the dispacher to give them my name, et al. "Sir, were you aware that the path you are riding on is within a state park, and all state parks close after dark?" I sort of shrugged my shoulders and said, "not really - but this is a regional park I think, no?" Meanwhile, he's flashlighting my bike and making comments about "what a fancy racing bike you have.. "(giving me the impression that he was being semi-sarcastic for implying that I stole it or something).

Right at about that same time I said this, three other cyclists came roaring up the same hill as I did wondering wtf was going on - all with lights on, flashy bike gear - all out of breath; looked like I was the missing quadruplet in the pack. The officer about shit his pants wondering what this was about, gets on his radio, said he may need backup. Until he heard a few of the other cyclists ask "...what's going on?, why is there a car in the ...oh wait..it's a police car...." We all were bewildered as to what to do. The cop ran a radio check of each of our drivers licenses, then after 10 minutes each, said "you are free to go...just keep this in mind..". I continued on...just about a block before I got off the trail - wondering to myself...sheesh...am I going to get hassled by the "man" everynight now? Unsure what to do, if I should keep biking, or just ignore the "..just keep this in mind" comment, whatevva that means. I did not get a "warning" nor a ticket...or anything. Just a "you happenned to be out here, we checked your ID...yer clean...and btw, this park may be closed after dark (little unclear on that...afterall..the park is a regional park...runs through 3 counties, 4 cities..and is part of public domain, where people walk dogs, jog, commute). Every night, I see tons of people out on the trail - and some do it because they commute.

Just aggravating to think that I may have to bike on the streets if this is the case - assholes. Hell, I am street legal - with lights, flashers, and I have an assortment of safety things, cell phone, ID, tools, et al. I find this really ironic after yesterday, talking with the Friends of the WO&D. We are harmless to why they think we are any threat. Rolls my fricken eyes, Oy fricken vay.

Wild day at work - much to do, little time to do it. But the day moved by quickly. Before I knew it, it was 5:30 - time to go biking. THe weather continued to be unseasonably warm (was high of 64 degrees), when I left the office - was 57 degrees. It was yet another pleasantly "warm" ride - I did sweat too much. Felt great, all 39 miles.

I stopped at the Vienna Community center on the way back to fill up one of my water bottles and happened to meet the president of the Friends of the Washington & Old Dominion Trail. We got to talking and invited me to become a Trail Patroller, I will gladly help out - heck I'm on the trail daily, and assist people all the time. Signed up tonight online. They did a very cool thing on their websie - they have a mileage calculator, not only in miles but in kilometers. Very cool.

Still dealing with computer woes - it's not the video card (just replaced it), gonna take monitor to work tomorrow and see if it displays same symptoms on another computer. Computers can be very frustrating at times.

Difficult monday to get up and go to work after a three day weekend - but I trudged through the means to get there on time and bear with the morning drama. Was not so unpleasant. Almost cheerful, being that people were relaxed and happy after the holidays. Settled into a drone of catch-up, then was called to a quick offsite meeting in Washington, DC - which took all afternoon, came back - finished up a strategy meeting then suited up for a bike ride.

I had been keeping a watch on the weather all day - is supposted to be in the 50s and 60s all week (very unusual for January - we should be in the middle of snow and ice). It was calling for rain - and to be in the low 60s. I was still cool with that. So I suited up - and went out on a swift 42 miler - it was almost too warm for what I was wearing. I was preparing for the temp to drop (especially after dark). It din't. So I sweated it out.

Came home, had dinner and plugged in the computer fresh back from the shop (problem with video card) only to discover the problem is probably (now) the actual monitor. Spent the better part of the evening dealing with new diagnostic stuff, et al. Oy vay - will have to babysit this 'puder the next few days.

circa 2004

A friend of mine told me I've started to look old - in recent photos. Unsure if it was the goatee, the very short hair, the weight loss, the lack of tan, the pose with baby, or more than likely - the bad fashion. The baggy pleated pants. Heck, they were all gifts, who am I to not bless the fashion scene with a gift - well, pleats are out. But I need pants, heck, I shed merely 4" off my waistline in the past year, sobeit. These pics (sent by the same friend) prove that I am now an old fart, the pics illustrate that I was young(er) and stupid(er). One is from circa 1999, on Halloween - with my date "ms Adorable", i just look like a fool in that picture...dressed up as Austin Powers (a friend lent me her lycra clothes...they were soo tight..I spoke 3 octaves higher...my date was dressed as Coco Channel, typical lesbian delusion. Anyhoo...that night was a very long night. (click on photos for full detail)

(post-blogged on 1/3 - computer in shop)
Arrrg, I fucking hate computers. This will be the third time I will try to type this - and save it before I lose it. I stupidly wrote about a page and a half without saving, then froze up. Oh well, the second time around will not be as exciting - just filled with rage.

Anyhoo, I went to the National Geographic Museum today - well, not really a museum - rather the National Geographic Society Headquarters (in Washington, DC) - which has a whole series of galleries. Albeit, nice galleries (but 1/2 the museum galleries are under construction). But it was a nice trip - I had never been there before. Saw two exibits, the first a photography exibit on the tribal courtships in Africa - the second, an interactive exhibit on the history of traditional to the digital cartographic mapmaking activities of National Geographic. Both very interesting. Out of the norm for me to choose these - but I was looking to do something different. The African tribal courtship photography display was interesting in that the archaic courtship methodology and practices may be different in the proclivity of how it is done in "nature" is really no different how we stupid modern people do it today. Granted we don't have plate lips, extended neck rings, or do hyper bizarre "charm dancing" (photo) to look totally crazy with the intentional ability to become "wall-eyed" and show teeth, almost in drag....the funny thing - is that we do the same bullshit to get laid. It's all about the same, whether it's lipstick, victims of fashion, piercings, tattoos, the way we dress to become attention whores to get laid, seek a stable mate....and then breed. CTRL+S (phew saved that).

Felt nice to do something a little different. I came home, had lunch, then drove out to Vienna to go on a bike ride. The weather decided to get colder (well heck, it was almost 70 degrees yesterday). Went on a short 35 miler - I was really stiff from the last 2 days...little burnt out on doing 95 miles in 2 days - but the weather was nice. So over the three day weekend, I did 130 miles.

Finished up the day with making some Penne with a Shitake and Clams in a champagne pesto butter sauce (nothing like cooking with left over champagne from New Years) - recipe soon to follow.
