Lately, I have been fascinated by two things. WWII aircraft and Stanley Kubrick. They are fascinating to me. The facination of WWII airplanes may be in part due to a recent trip to the new Smithsonian Air & Space Museum in Dulles, VA, but I've always admired them since a child. I used to build many of them as models. Stanley Kubrick is just a fascinating person. I read a recent article about he and his bizarre and eclectic obsessions about boxes, ink, stationary, fonts, et al. He was a collector - and a hermit. Very eccentric.
Wow....huge fire today in Richmond, VA. Near where I used to live off and on...go to school, et al. I lived down the street from the fire on two different accounts. I went to a certain art school there. The VCU dorm that burned down was to replace the Hardees that used to be there...where I would get coffee in the morn before studio classes at the old sculpture department (which was an old converted car dealership) which is now the parking deck/bookstore. I used to have a car repaired at the Capital Garage before it was turned into loft apartments. the fire happenned directly behind the old "Grace Place" restaurant...a vegan yuppy restaurant that had a nice back outdoor dining area where I used to take my dates to. Same block where I'd get my haircut at that 80 year old racist barber. Same block where I would get glass for projects at Richmond glass....that old bookstore with the ratty old cat. And of course...Sheilds...which used to be the coolest place back in 1986 to shop for authentic vintage clothing.
I mentioned in an earlier post that I have not read www.fark.com lately........well...they posted a major news about it...and of course, fark has forums to discuss things. I didn't realize there were so many dedicated fark people who lived in Richmond. Lot of them even took time to take pics with their cell phones and post them in real time as it was happening. Of course...I was not even aware of all of this. I was at work. In a different city in VA. I didn't know until my sweetie, Kari called me at work to say thsat I was a loser to still be AT work at 5:45pm on a friday...and by the way "did you hear about the fire in Richmond?"
I have to say I love to cook. Tonight, I made fresh pan seared bratwurst in a wine sauce with a side of spinach infused with garlic and scallions. Total yum. I never reference recipes anymore.....unless I do something like bake bread (which is not very often) - I cook from what I know. Not to boast....but, I am one of those intuitive yet ingenious cooks that knows the basics.....how things go together. How long things take to cook without setting a timer....without exact measurements.....kinda like knowing how much a swig or a splash is...a dash or a dribble....I know the difference between Extra Virgin olive oil and just Olive Oil....the difference between Walmart and Williams & Sonoma...that a roux is not a shortened version of a kangaroo or the periodic element ruthenium.
