Alien UHaul Truck

busy busy day....stayed up way too late last night...took a nap and then woke up and helped my neighbors pack their alien van (pictured - click for full van). Seemed that they had enuff of the Washington, DC area and were gonna move back to Ohio. Both are pilots for an airline - it was funny watching them come home in their flight uniforms. I got roped into helping them because i noticed that they were trying to wrench the handlebars on a really expensive Gary Fisher bike - I was watching them as I was watering my deck garden. Asked if I could help - we spent an hour putting the puzzle together. They were appreciative and got it all in. I came upstairs and snapped the photo over a flowerbox from my deck.

The rest of the day was relatively relaxing - went on a 62 mile bike ride. Was much cooler then the past few days then came home took a quick dip in the pool. QUick nap afterwards and then ran to the grocery store and of all places, Walmart to get a few more deck plants and other domestic crap. Storm was brewing in the distance - nice lightning and wind to cool things off. Came home and unpacked and planted a few things in the garden - sat down to enjoy a beer on the deck with some candles.

Relaxing day.

Tomorrow will sort of similiar - just a long ass bike ride, then the pool. I'll be visiting my parents in the late afternoon/early evening for a steak on the grill. May have to get a few clippings from their herb garden.

This heat wave continues - I hope we have a cold front coming soon. Another sweltering day in the land of corporate drama, cycling madness and culinary persuits.

Even though it was hot - was a very pretty day. Enjoyed my minute 15 minute drive to work before all hell broke out. Was too fast of a day - but productive in a staging sort of anticipation. Finished up a little early and found myself suiting up for a brutally hot ride. Decided that I was only gonna do 38 miles and get back to drive home in enough time to take a dip in the pool to cool off. Did exactly that. Very relaxing.

Meat Altar

Last night I got this huge "meat sword" of a Rib Eye slab of meat...about 7lbs - tonight I needed to sever off many thick ass steaks and freeze them. After I finished cutting them up and put them in ziplock bags for the freezer..I noticed the most fucked up tableau in front of me after I labled each meat packet with today's date (pictured). Strange - a meat altar. The photo within the picture was a golden find when I lived in Richmond, VA...I found the photo in the alley behind a photo processing place..a "found photo" (I collect them) of what seems to be a Catholic Confirmation photo of many pre-pubescent girls all in varying heights and stages of uniquely designed confirmation dresses...all perched on what seems to be a curb in front of a nondescript textured paint flaking wall. It's the most bizarre pic..very compelling to look at. I had to have it framed...so there it happened to be sitting in my kitchen on a satellite work area...where I had these oil lamps lit...where I laid the freshly cut meat.

Odd.

Another HOT day - got up to the high 90s...here it is past 11pm - still 86 degrees outside with nasty humidity.

Work was the usual whirlwind of high semi-corporate drama. Finished up and went on a very nasty 38 mile training ride. My lower back has been hurting for the past day or so after I stupidly managed to wrench it while putting my bike in my trunk after Monday night's training ride - so I took it easy today. Did a few errands and came home to do domestic things and bask in the aura of AC to do bills and catch up on correspondence. Was just a lazy night.

Was thinking today how much I love my location of where I live in relation to gas prices. My commute to work is a mere 6 miles by car and all of my errands I can do each way - no frivolous errands. I've been here three weeks and have still not needed to gas up my car - just under a tank of gas. Before, I was having to gas up at least twice a week with my commute and my errands in off-track areas. I think I've saved almost 100 bucks in just gas the past month. When it gets cooler and I decide to bike to work...that will even be less. Cracks my knuckles as to what I'll spend the extra cash on - that ORBEA ORCA frame is starting to look very sexy now.

Was a tame day at work - and a pleasant day outside. Not bad for a monday. Was almost un-hot (87 degrees) when I left work (late) for a 44 mile training ride. Very pleasant. Came home and did a few domestic things and toyed with watching tv while I started my other broad spectrum cycling plans/goals for the next year(s) or so.

List so far is: The California Death Ride, The Davis Double Century, Mountain Mama, Hilly Hellacious Hundred and Bridge to Bridge Incredible Century (which I'm doing this Sept 18th)...but I'm not gonna do the THE IDITAROD TRAIL INVITATIONAL (a human powered ultra-marathon).

I'm starting to plan for getting a foot in the door for the Assault of Mt. Mitchell and toying with the idea of doing the Race Across America before I turn 40. List gets larger. Feel free to add to the list in comments.

I'm lookin' forward to the pain and spectacle of halluciunating from exhaustion.

will share this post about a cyclist getting killed from a sensless motorist, I am VERY angered about this. It shares much insight to what we (passioned cyclists) do to be cut short by idiots.

My heart goes out to the Gordon family.

Will just say that today was amazing.

Went on a 44 mile bike ride, then hopped into the pool for a quick 1/2 hour..came home...took a nap for an hour then finished prepping for my parents coming over.

Had a great time with my parents, had them over for a very nice dinner party - had homemade bruschetta with mozzerella and a nice salad of many things (fritta/boston red lettuce/romaine w/ yellow & orange peppers, red onion, pine nuts generously covered with a rasberry vinagrette dressing)...then we had a nice pasta (wheat linguini - white clam sauce with chardonnay infused shitake mushrooms, cilantro & roasted garlic with pecorino romano cheese slivers)..all homemade - much chardonnay followed by coffee & pears. we were all laughs and enjoying the time. Got to see my parents new Caravan..this thing is amazing....all the bells n whistles. Jetsonesque.

We hugged and said farewell then I finished cleaning up and sat on my deck and
listened to the Gin Blossoms perform at the Belmont Country Club - a
mere earshot from my deck. Watched the film "I Am Sam"
tonight...starring Sean Penn, Michelle Pfifer, et al - a man trapped
in a autistic child's body trying to fight for his child's
custody.

Sunday night anxiety settles in.
